This is an 3 days on-site 2 days remote position to develop, implement, support, and maintain virtual environments and enterprise desktop environments, as well as related system management infrastructure at TriMet. • The VDI Systems Engineer position will be a part of a Technical Support team providing agency wide technical support utilizing Virtual Technology System. • The position will work closely with the Server Engineers, Application Developers, Information Security and Technical Support team to develop and support agency Virtual Desktop infrastructure. • The position will include conducting research and development on the growth and future technical advances of IT infrastructure, supporting TriMet’s system policy configuration, application packaging scripting, and distribution, performing security patches, managing images, supporting back-end server infrastructure, and supporting users. • The position requires a commitment to safety and security through consistent and professional behaviors.. TriMet’s IT Department is a 24/7, high-availability environment and the position requires the individual to be on call as needed, including potentially nights and weekends. • The job requires other duties to be performed as assigned. Essential Functions: • Monitor the health and analyze performance of the virtualization environment. • Make recommendations and implement changes to improve the overall performance of vSphere. • Identify resource realignment needs to correct under-provisioned and over-provisioned virtual systems. • Recommend best practices for design and installation of new virtual platforms. • Test, upgrade, and migrate virtual environment as new versions of software and hardware become available. • Create and document virtualization standards and procedures within the organization. • Perform basic analysis, design, implementation, and maintenance activities in various areas of IT. • Formulate and/or define scope and objectives of feasibility studies. • Work independently and lead moderately complex assignments. • Consistently apply the concepts of appropriate standard methodologies and best practices. • Prepare reports, record progress, and create solutions to IT problems/issues. • Interface with contractors and vendors as needed to evaluate and recommend software, hardware, and services. • Perform and/or oversee daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs. • Install, configure, test, and deploy software packages/security patches related to the enterprise environment. • Effectively provision, install/configure, operate, and maintain systems hardware, systems software, and related infrastructure. • Within the Technical Support team, ensure maintenance of standards for packaging, system policies and automation configurations. • Evaluate requests for hardware and software. • Research and recommend solutions to technology needs that are compatible with the client’s technology architecture and infrastructure and resource constraints. • Remain current on knowledge of industry standards in the server, desktop and mobile administration, protocols, and security. • Participate in evaluating existing systems and processes to identify improvements and updates that keep them running in optimal conditions.
