Description

The Senior System Administrator is responsible for managing and maintaining the overall stability, security, and performance of the organization's computer systems and networks. This role involves designing, implementing, and supporting various IT infrastructure components, including servers, storage systems, operating systems, network devices, and software applications. The Senior System Administrator collaborates with cross-functional teams to ensure smooth system operations, troubleshoots technical issues, and provides expert guidance on system upgrades and enhancements. This position also involves managing a team of system administrators and providing mentorship and training as needed.

1. System Management

  • Plan, install, configure, and maintain servers, operating systems, and related software components.
  • Monitor system performance, resource utilization, and capacity to ensure optimal operation.
  • Implement and maintain security measures, including firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and access controls.
  • Perform regular system backups and implement disaster recovery procedures.

2. Network Management

  • Design, configure, and maintain network infrastructure, including routers, switches, and firewalls.
  • Monitor network performance, identify and resolve issues, and optimize network efficiency.
  • Implement and manage Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and other remote access solutions.
  • Ensure network security by applying appropriate security measures and protocols.

3. Application Support

  • Install, configure, and maintain software applications and services, ensuring compatibility with existing systems.
  • Troubleshoot application issues, perform software upgrades, and apply patches and fixes as needed.
  • Collaborate with application developers and vendors to resolve complex software-related problems.

4. System Monitoring and Troubleshooting

  • Monitor system logs, alerts, and performance metrics to proactively identify and resolve issues.
  • Investigate and troubleshoot hardware and software problems, ensuring timely resolution.
  • Coordinate with vendors and external support teams to resolve escalated technical issues.

5. Team Collaboration

  • Work with cross-functional teams, including IT, security, and operations, to ensure system integration and alignment with organizational goals.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment, encouraging knowledge sharing and continuous learning.

6. Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date system documentation, including configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting guides.
  • Generate reports on system performance, security incidents, and maintenance activities.
  • Effectively communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

 

Security & Compliance Responsibilities

Firewall & Network Security

  • Configure and maintain firewalls to protect the network from unauthorized access.
  • Set up and manage secure Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) for remote employees.
  • Use network monitoring tools to detect unusual activity or potential breaches.
  • Establish and maintain secure guest Wi-Fi networks with restricted access to internal resources.

User Access Management

  • Create and manage user accounts, ensuring appropriate access levels.
  • Enforce strong password policies and implement multi-factor authentication (MFA).
  • Revoke access for employees leaving the organization or contractors completing their work.

System Hardening

  • Secure servers by disabling unnecessary services and applying security patches.
  • Install and manage antivirus, anti-malware, and endpoint detection tools on all devices.
  • Harden operating systems by disabling unused ports and enabling firewalls.

Compliance and Auditing

  • Conduct regular security audits to identify and address vulnerabilities.
  • Ensure compliance with industry regulations (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA, PCI-DSS).
  • Maintain logs of system activity for auditing and troubleshooting purposes.

Cybersecurity Awareness

  • Conduct employee training on cybersecurity best practices (e.g., phishing awareness, password hygiene).
  • Perform phishing simulations to assess employee awareness and response.

Physical Security

  • Manage access control systems, including keys, access cards, and door codes.
  • Log visitors, issue temporary badges, and ensure they are escorted when necessary.
  • Coordinate with security teams to monitor CCTV cameras and alarm systems.
  • Ensure emergency exits are accessible and clearly marked.

Data & Document Security

  • Securely store and dispose of sensitive documents (e.g., using shredders).
  • Screen incoming mail and packages for security risks.
  • Ensure printers and copiers are secure and that sensitive documents are not left unattended.

Access Management

  • Provide temporary Wi-Fi access to visitors with limited permissions.
  • Grant short-term access to specific areas for contractors or visitors.
  • Prevent unauthorized duplication of office keys.

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Proven experience as a system administrator, preferably in a senior or lead role.
  • Strong knowledge of server administration, virtualization technologies, and operating systems (e.g., Windows Server, Linux/Unix).
  • Proficiency in network administration, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPN, and routing protocols.
  • Experience with storage systems, backup solutions, and disaster recovery procedures.
  • Solid understanding of cybersecurity principles, including access controls, authentication, encryption, and vulnerability management.
  • Familiarity with security best practices, including firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and access controls.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills and ability to resolve complex technical issues.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Leadership abilities, including team management, mentoring, and training.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA), Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)) are a plus
