Description

Lead Database Administrator

We're seeking a hands-on, deeply technical database lead who thrives at the intersection of systems stability, performance, and scalable design. You’ll own the full lifecycle of our database environments—driving strategy, building infrastructure, and tuning for precision. This isn’t just a DBA role—it’s leadership in action.

What You'll Be Owning

  • Technical Leadership: You’ll be the go-to for all database decisions—architecture, design, builds, and ops. Full-stack ownership across SQL Server and Oracle environments.
  • Performance & Maintenance: Proactive monitoring, root-cause resolution, version upgrades, backup integrity, and tuning. You keep latency low and uptime high.
  • Environment Stewardship: Partner with developers and QA to maintain non-prod spaces. While devs handle reporting, you ensure they’ve got the horsepower and headroom to build fast and test often.
  • Production Governance: Your team controls all change management in prod—every deployment, every rollback, every migration. Nothing moves without your sign-off.
  • Automation & Modernization: You’ll push forward with automation for DB refreshes and environment builds. PowerShell or SQL scripting skills? That’s rocket fuel.
  • Team & Vendor Oversight: You’ll manage workstreams, delegate routine tasks to external vendors, and make sure internal resources stay focused on high-impact projects.
  • Strategic Roadmapping: You’ll help shape the future—bringing forward ideas for supportability, modernization, and growth.

Schedule & Work Style

  • Hybrid: 4 days onsite / 1 day WFH in Des Moines
  • On-Call Rotation: You’ll be part of the escalation team. Managed Services takes first pass—your expertise comes in when it really matters.

Must-Have Credentials

  • Bachelor’s in Computer Science or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in advanced DataBase operations—development, tuning, warehousing, and troubleshooting.
  • Deep expertise in Microsoft SQL Server (2016+); strong skills in T-SQL, SSIS, and SSRS.
  • Automation skills using scripting tools (SQL Script, PowerShell) highly valued.
  • Fluency in data security best practices—because trust and safety come standard.

Bonus Points If You Bring...

  • Operational knowledge of Oracle
  • Change Management chops in regulated ecosystems.
  • Experience implementing encryption (DB and client-side).
  • Familiarity with RedGate Data Masker, Rubrik, or similar monitoring/backup solutions.

The Intangibles

  • You’re self-motivated and own outcomes like a pro.
  • You know how to drive solo but thrive in teams.
  • You can translate tech speak for non-technical audiences with ease.
